Negative Optimization: Microsoft removes the most basic system tray feature in Windows 11

Microsoft is continuing to polish the taskbar experience in Windows 11, and the debut of the tablet-optimized interface a few days ago is living proof of that. However, it turns out that Microsoft is doing the opposite, sometimes making it harder to use certain features in Windows 11. The most typical example is the system tray icon, as Microsoft recently removed the ability to drag the icons shown here in beta systems.

In other words, if you want to rearrange the icons in the system tray, the only option is to use a dedicated page in the Settings app to handle it, which can no longer be solved with a simple mouse drag and drop.

In a Feedback Hub post, Microsoft confirmed that this is a change implemented after the debut of the tablet-optimized taskbar in Windows 11 (the change is currently available in preview builds of the operating system and as part of the Windows Insider program) Ship).

“We will continue to monitor this feedback, but with the update, we made in Build 22563 for the new tablet-optimized taskbar, we no longer support dragging in the systray or between the systray and show hidden icons. Instead, use the Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > System Tray section to manage these icons,” Microsoft explained.

The tablet-optimized taskbar offers Windows 11 users two different states, called collapsed and expanded.

“In the folded state, the taskbar is out of your sight, giving you more screen real estate and preventing you from accidentally calling the taskbar while holding the tablet. In the unfolded state, the taskbar is optimized for easier use of Touch. You can easily switch between these two states by swiping up or down on the bottom of the device,” Microsoft explained.

From the tone, Microsoft doesn’t seem willing to undo this change regarding the system tray icons, so make sure you post in the Feedback Hub and let the company know what you think.
