With Microsoft’s reintroduction of multi-tab functionality to Windows 11’s File Explorer, Insider testers are now finding the ability to reorder tabs. Interested Insider testers can try to manually turn it on in the Windows 11 preview version. The related operations work as expected, as shown by Reddit user Levminer in the animation.
It is reported that Microsoft tried to introduce the multi-tab function in the file explorer of the Windows 8 operating system a few years ago, and at that time the company developed the Edge-based Sets multi-tab scheme. Sadly, the software giant subsequently pulled Sets and promised to bring back multi-tabs in File Explorer under the right circumstances, and years have passed in a flash.
The feature seems to work exactly as the user expects, just as you would drag and drop a tab in the browser. It’s unclear when Windows 11 will officially usher in the multi-tab feature in File Explorer, but Insider testers have been able to get an early taste of it.
Microsoft is expected to roll out a new Windows 11 preview next week, but we don’t know if the feature will be included in the new build. When the company took down Sets in 2018, it said:
Based on your feedback, we’ve been focusing on improvements including visual design and will continue to better integrate the Sets feature for Office and Microsoft Edge to enhance the workflow experience. If you’ve been testing Sets, you won’t see it in today’s builds. Sets are expected to return during future WIP flight tests, and thanks again everyone for your feedback.
