Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta Released: Introducing Massive Improvements

Canonical and the Ubuntu community today announced the beta release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish”, with the official release scheduled for April 21st. In addition, Ubuntu / Ubuntu Server / Ubuntu Cloud and flavors such as Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu are also released simultaneously.

Compared to Ubuntu 21.10, Ubuntu 22.04 Beta pulls in a number of package updates, including some GNOME 42 components, and now defaults to GNOME’s Wayland session and NVIDIA’s drivers, including GNOME triple, buffering patches, systemd-for out-of-memory processing oomd integration, retiring some partner profiles, adjusting its POWER support baseline, and many other updates.

On the kernel side, this release uses Linux 5.15 due to its Long Term Support (LTS) support status. This is a bit unfortunate, as Linux 5.17 is already stable, and there are a ton of improvements between 5.16 and 5.17, most of which haven’t been rolled back to Jammy’s 5.15 kernel build.
