Chrome Web Store: New awards announced for worthwhile extensions

Google has announced two new badges for Chrome extension developers via email via the Chrome Web Store, the Featured and Established badges. Both are slated to hit stores in the coming weeks. Such badges ensure that developers with these badges rank higher in search and filtering in the web store, and the underlying extensions can also appear in special promotions on and off the Chrome web store.

Since these are awards, you can’t just pin a badge on yourself, they have to be awarded. Google explains the two new awards as follows:

  • The Featured badge is awarded to extensions that follow our technical best practices and meet high standards of usability and design. Featured Badges are assigned to qualifying Extensions through our Extension Review System. Chrome staff manually rate each extension before it receives the badge, paying special attention to the following:
    • Adhering to Chrome Web Store best practice guidelines, including providing an engaging and intuitive experience, using the latest platform APIs, and respecting end-user privacy.
    • A clear and useful site for potential users, with high-quality images and a detailed description.
  • The new Established Publisher badge recognizes developers who have verified their identity and demonstrated compliance with developer program policies. This badge is automatically awarded to publishers who meet the following two conditions:
    • The identity of the publisher has been verified.
    • The publisher has demonstrated a consistently positive track record of using Google services and adhering to developer program policies.

Any extension created by a developer who follows the Chrome Web Store developer program guidelines and has no unsolved violations would be considered for the rating. With new developers, care is taken to ensure that they act a few months after the conditions mentioned before their extensions can be considered.
