Ubisoft: Not all of our games have to be bigger to be better

After playing a crucial role in kicking off the era of open-world games, Ubisoft has often received strong criticism over the past few years for proposing titles with excessively generous maps and gargantuan amounts of secondary and optional content.

In offering so much to its community, the publisher from beyond the Alps has sometimes been criticized for having proposed content that is too dispersive and not treated in the same way in all its aspects. With the arrival of Ubisoft Scalar, it seemed that the natural path for the company was to create titles even larger and full of content than the last episodes of the Assassin’s Creed series.

Although Scalar cloud technology will give developers all the tools to make their games even more extensive, it is not said that every single Ubisoft production will have to follow the diktat “bigger is better”. This is what Patrick Bach of Ubisoft Stockholm said during an interview with Games Industry:

“Do we need games to be bigger to be better? No. Will some games benefit from the possibility of being larger? Absolutely. No aspect of a game should be inspired by the motto “more is better”. This is a technology and it doesn’t determine what games you create, but there are games that will definitely benefit from being bigger, more detailed, able to scale and be bigger than they are today.”

Recently the separation between Ubisoft and Patrick Plourde, creator of Child of Light and creative director of Far Cry 3, has been made official.
