Facebook’s parent company Meta plans to release four more VR headsets between now and 2024, The Information reported Monday, citing the company’s internal roadmap. The first will be Project Cambria, Meta’s upcoming high-end VR headset, which is said to be released around September.
According to The Information, the headset is expected to cost around $799. However, a Meta spokesman said the price of the Cambria would be “significantly” higher, though no specific price was provided.
Meta is also reportedly planning to release a follow-up to Cambria, codenamed Funston, in 2024.
In addition to the two high-end headsets, Meta also plans to launch two new versions of the lower-cost Quest headset, slated for release in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The current Meta Quest 2 — formerly known as the Oculus Quest 2 — starts at $299.
The company declined to comment on unannounced products.
Products like VR headsets could be a key part of Meta’s push for the metaverse, the virtual worlds in which people can work, play and socialize. Meta will open its first retail store later this month to showcase its VR headsets and other devices, underscoring the tech giant’s serious approach to creating consumer hardware to take on rivals. Sony, Apple and others are all expected to launch a wave of new VR and MR headsets this year.
In addition to the new VR headset, Meta is also said to be planning to launch AR glasses by 2024, with more advanced designs coming in 2026 and 2028.
