Apple, Google, Microsoft and FIDO announce commitment to a passwordless future

Security agency FIDO has received new support from Apple, Google and Microsoft, and tech companies all announced they will expand support for the alliance’s passwordless login standard.

After joining the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) consortium in 2020, major tech companies such as Apple have announced expanded support for the organization’s technologies and goals. In a joint statement from FIDO, Apple, Google and Microsoft, the alliance aims to allow websites and apps to provide secure and simple logins without the use of passwords.

“Just as we designed our products to be intuitive and capable, we also designed them to be private and secure,” said Kurt Knight, Apple’s senior director of platform product marketing, in a statement.

Working with the industry Building new, more secure ways to log in, providing better protection and eliminating password vulnerabilities is at the heart of our commitment to creating products that provide maximum security and a transparent user experience, all to protect users’ personal information Safety.

FIDO believes that password authentication is one of the biggest security concerns because the reuse of passwords means that a vulnerability in one service can expose other services. It also believes that managing passwords is cumbersome for consumers, while its standards will allow for a secure password-less option.

“Users will log in through the same actions they take to unlock their devices multiple times a day,” the alliance said, “such as simply verifying their fingerprints or face, or device passwords.”

However, it’s unclear how going back to a device PIN is more secure than a properly configured password. PIN codes for most iPhone devices are 4 or 6 digits and currently require an extra step to make them longer or alphanumeric.

However, this approach fits with Apple’s own proposed password feature, previously announced at WWDC 2021. This is designed to mimic a hardware security key, but use iCloud Keychain instead of a physical device.

So far, Apple has introduced initial support for its passcode lock technology in iOS 15.4. There is currently no expected release date for the new identity authentication feature on any of the aforementioned tech giants’ platforms.

Apple, Google and Microsoft will implement the features “over the next year,” the group’s statement said. Apple is most likely to unveil the new feature at WWDC 2022 and launch it alongside the new iPhones in the fall.
