Microsoft releases Windows 11 Dev 25115 version update

Microsoft has now pushed the Build 25115 version update for the Windows 11 preview version, which is separated from the Beta channel, bringing a new feature function and a lot of detailed improvements.

This also means that starting today, the Windows 11 preview version has ushered in a new preview version of the active development branch, which is one of the early optional branches of next year’s 23H2 version (the 23H2 update will go live later next year). From now on Microsoft will start testing 23H2 “Sun Valley 3”.

At the same time, this also means that Microsoft has basically completed the development of the Windows 11 22H2 version, and may push the RTM version at the end of the month. Judging from what has been updated this year, 22H2 is basically a UI change, and there seems to be nothing too exciting except for the Android subsystem.

In today’s Build 25115 preview, Microsoft introduced a new feature called Action Suggestions. As the name suggests, it helps users be more productive by guessing what they want to do next based on the text you select.

For example, if you mention a date in Microsoft Teams, the system assumes you’re likely to paste it into another app or create an event for that day in the calendar.

Windows 11 Build 25115 Action Recommendations

With this feature, users will reduce the steps required to perform operations after copying or selecting text. This feature does help users speed up some of the hassles of doing things manually on Windows, but it really depends on how smart Win11 is.

When copying a phone number, Windows will pop up an “embedded closeable” lightweight UI that suggests the user to use Teams or another app that supports dialing to make the call.

When copying date and/or time, Windows will pop up an “embedded closable” lightweight UI that advises the user to create an event using a supported calendar application. When the user selects a preference, Win11 will launch the relevant app and pop up a page with the corresponding calendar event creation, while automatically filling in the date and/or time for you.

It is worth mentioning that if you select a phone number, you can also choose Bing on the Microsoft Edge browser in addition to choosing to make a call. But from these points alone, there is not much progress on this new feature, but it is reported that Microsoft is planning to use its machine learning function to better understand user behavior and provide relevant recommendations.

Windows 11 Build 25115 improvements and fixes

Unsurprisingly, the updates starting with this version will appear in the 2023 Windows 11 Update, so it’s still in the early stages of development, most features are expected to be released later, and it’s full of weird bugs.

Aside from the Action Suggestions, Windows 11 Build 25115 includes only minor improvements and bug fixes. Microsoft updated the icons in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to “better match the look and feel of Windows 11”; and the underlying voice platform of Win11 has also been updated to provide better voice Access support.

Microsoft also fixed an issue that stuck when opening the Settings > Personalization > System Tray Icons in the Taskbar page, which also caused a bug in File Explorer (Explorer .exe). Also, an issue where users would get the error 0x800703E6 when copying files from Google Drive has been fixed. Microsoft also said it made improvements to File Explorer’s performance, especially the Home page, and fixed a bug that “browsers crash when you hold down CTRL + ALT + DEL”.

Additional fixes for Windows 11 Build 25115:

  • Fixed an issue that would cause explorer.exe to crash.
  • Fixed an issue that could lock explorer.exe in some cases.
  • Fixed issues with access keys in the Task Manager, including users not being able to directly press ALT + without releasing the ALT key.
  • Fixed an issue that caused 100% CPU usage on Windows.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Smart App Control to block properly signed apps.
  • Fixed an issue where the Memory Integrity feature was incorrectly turned off.
  • Fixed an issue with some applications closing before Live Captions were running.
