Android 13: These are the main innovations in the second beta of the new Google operating system

A few days ago, Google released the second Android 13 beta, marking the mountain festival, as only two more betas will follow before the final version is released. As with all previous versions, there are also a number of innovations in the second beta, which we want to summarize for you here.

Android 13 reached the beta phase a few weeks ago, which was only recognized a few days ago on the big Google I/O stage. At the same time, the second beta was released, which brought some additional adjustments. However, the time for really big steps is over now, so you shouldn’t expect too much from the update. In the following list, you will always find the screenshot of beta 1 on the left and that of beta 2 on the right.

Optimized battery widget

The battery widget can still be used oversized but ensures that you have more free space instead of a gigantic bar. Doesn’t change much, but definitely looks better.

The battery is saved earlier

If you want to activate the energy saving mode automatically, this can now only be activated up to a minimum of 10 percent. Previously you could down to five percent.

New thumbnail for display

The preview image for adjusting the display options has been changed. That would only be a detail, but actually, it makes more sense because it shows more shapes. While you only saw circles and ovals before, there are now circles, rectangles and, thanks to the speech bubble, also a triangular shape. This can be better, especially for assessing the contrast.

Pause apps

The option to pause apps has been renamed with an additional explanation of what happens with this setting. Instead of talking about removing permissions and freeing up storage space, as before, there is now an option to pause with the resulting consequences. In addition, “unused apps” is now called “unused apps settings” and indicates additional setting options.

New Now Playing rendering

The display of active media playback in the notifications has been revised. In addition to the normal controls, there are now thumbs up and down and a new arrangement of options. Because the notification always refers to a title and not the entire playlist, the buttons for repeat and random have been removed. In addition, the large status button with PLAY or Pause has been replaced with a normal button within the bottom bar.

With Android 13, as with Android 12L, the focus is on providing large displays with optimized surfaces. Many optimizations are made in the direction of the tablet and you want to be prepared for your own pixel tablet. This seems to be a core issue in this release after Android 12 was about the basic design (Material You) and the focus on security and user privacy in every version.
