ProtonMail and more: innovations announced

People at Proton are busy. The best-known product is probably ProtonMail, but there is something more coming from the Swiss forge, for example, a VPN offer. Some innovations regarding mail and calendar have been announced recently, but that should not have been it yet.

According to the company, the unification of all Proton services into a single ecosystem is a prerequisite for offering many benefits to the community in the future. The new unified Proton ecosystem will enable developers to increase integrations between Proton services (e.g. events in your email are automatically added to the calendar, large email attachments are automatically removed by Proton Drive links replaced, etc.). However, this requires some changes.

Of course, your email address will not change. However, there will be a new page that will be redirected to, everything related to Proton will go to proton.me. This means that protonmail.com will be redirected to proton.me, and eventually, Proton web applications like mail.protonmail.com, calendar.protonmail.com, etc. will also redirect to mail.proton.me, calendar.proton.me, etc will. If users are already logged in, they won’t be redirected immediately, but new sessions will use mail.proton.me, calendar.proton.me, etc. instead.

Last month it also made @proton.me addresses available and users can add an @proton.me address to their account for free. In response to user feedback, the paid plans will also be updated. There will be no price changes for existing subscribers, and all plans will be upgraded to offer more storage and features for existing subscribers.

More storage was one of the top requested features, and with Proton Drive now in beta, adding more storage to Proton plans comes at just the right time, the creators say. Another wish that has been expressed time and time again is unified plans for Proton services. If users are currently subscribed to both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN, they will automatically upgrade the plan to a new package that includes Proton Drive and Proton Calendar at no additional cost.

As always, we will continue to offer free versions of all Proton services to ensure privacy is accessible to all. The changes should start next week. But after that, it’s not over. One wants to fulfill long-cherished wishes of the community, e.g. B. 2FA with hardware tokens, better integration of mail and calendar and the introduction of Proton Drive with support for more platforms.
