Samsung Display is working on blue phosphorescent OLED materials

According to a Korean professor, Samsung Display is researching blue phosphorescent OLED materials for quantum dot (QD)-OLED panels. “Samsung Display seems to be prioritizing the application of blue phosphorescent OLED materials in advanced TV panels,” Kwon Jang-hyuk, a professor at Kyung Hee University in South Korea, said at the “SID 2022 Review Symposium”, according to Korean media The Elec.

It is reported that display makers and materials companies such as UDC are researching phosphorescent OLED materials to extend the life of OLED panels. Current OLED panels for TVs and smartphones use red and green phosphorescent OLED materials with an internal luminous efficiency of 100%, while the luminous efficiency of blue fluorescent materials is only about 25%.

The report pointed out that Samsung Display’s current QD-OLED panels use blue fluorescent OLED materials and green phosphorescent OLED materials as emission layers. If blue phosphorescent OLED materials are used, Samsung Display can reduce the number of blue layers to one.

In February of this year, Samsung Display published a paper titled “Unusually stable blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes” in the journal Nature Photonics, Kwon Jang-hyuk said: “This research is carried out in more than 1 year. Previously done, Samsung Display may have developed blue phosphorescent OLED materials, and the company aims to have visible research results within the year.”
