In a blog post on Thursday, Google announced that the upcoming Android 13 beta 3 release will bring native support for braille displays. A braille display is an electromechanical device that displays information by passing round-tipped pins through holes in a flat surface, allowing blind users (who cannot use screen readers) to access a smartphone or computer.

As early as iOS 12, Apple’s iPhone supported the use of braille displays, and Android’s native support can be said to belong overdue. Google says that after the Android 13 Beta 3 update, there is no need to download additional software to use most braille displays, and blind people can use the display buttons to browse the screen and then do things like compose emails, and make calls, send text messages or read books.
