Google Chat service welcomes new warning banners to better block malicious link threats

Google announced Thursday that as Google Chat replaces Hangouts as the instant messaging tool of choice for many users, the company is also working to warn everyone against potential phishing and malware attacks.

As Google’s latest move to curb phishing threats, the company discussed multiple efforts to enhance the user experience at this year’s I/O developer conference, including warnings about potential security issues, and ways to address related issues.

In addition, Google has other security measures, such as expanding two-step verification, personalized advertising, and a deeper data security program. The latest news is that in a blog post on Thursday, Google announced a new warning banner for Workspace/Gmail users designed to alert links to potential malware, phishing, or ransomware.

In fact, as early as late April, this feature has been extended to the Workspace productivity application. Software such as Docs documents, Sheets spreadsheets, Slides presentations, and Drawing will warn you of suspicious malicious files, no matter where the user opens the link.

This feature is planned to be rolled out to more customers in the coming weeks and is available for personal Google Accounts and all Workspace users.
