AlmaLinux 9.0 Released – Community Free Alternative to RHEL 9.0

AlmaLinux is one of those distros that was born with CentOS Linux (non-Stream) coming to an end, and has already made a name for itself in the Linux industry for those looking for a no-cost/community alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux Support is provided. Just a week after RHEL 9.0 went live, AlmaLinux 9.0 was released today.

Following the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 last week, AlmaLinux 9.0 has entered GA status, and the AlmaLinux 9 beta version has been available since April, and development progress has accelerated significantly after the upstream RHEL 9.0 debut.

Some people probably remember that as early as May 2019, after RHEL 8.0 was released, it did not start GA until September 2019 as a downstream version of CentOS 8.0. Over the years, delays of weeks or even months have not been uncommon for these community/no-cost RHEL alternatives, be it CentOS, formerly Scientific Linux, and others. So it’s pretty exciting to see AlmaLinux roll out first with an RHEL 9.0-based option.

Over the past year, AlmaLinux has gained considerable notoriety as a zero-cost enterprise Linux distribution for CentOS/RHEL. Like upstream Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, AlmaLinux 9 uses the Linux 5.14 kernel, GCC 11 as the system compiler, Python 3.9, and other same package versions/sources as RHEL9.

RHEL/AlmaLinux 9 also highlights improvements made to the Cockpit web management interface, enhancements to live to a patch of the kernel, improvements to container and cloud integration, OpenSSL 3, and various other security improvements. AlmaLinux 9.0 is available for x86_64, AArch64, POWER PPC64LE and IBM s390x.
