BMW to build electric cars in Mexico in 2027

BMW CEO Oliver Zipps said last month that crossover production will come to Mexico, but did not disclose specific plans. Existing some media reports said that BMW will build cars in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. BMW’s $1 billion assembly plant in Mexico could become the automaker’s first dedicated electric vehicle production center.

Industry analyst AutoForecast Solutions said BMW plans to start producing the iX3 electric car and new-energy 3 Series sedan at its plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, starting in 2027, with mass production in the first and second half of the year, respectively.

The assembly plant BMW opened in 2019 currently makes gasoline versions of the 3 Series sedan and 2 Series Coupe with an annual capacity of 175,000 vehicles, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania.

In April of this year, some media said that BMW plans to transfer part of the production of the X3 to Mexico. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse also hinted at making cars in Mexico.
