Where is the Google OS?

Google OS

Google OS

Fuchsia was on everyone’s lips long before the market launch. Because it was exciting enough that Google developed a completely new operating system over many years. So new that it even has a new core integrated. Unlike Android and ChromeOS, which are each based on a standard Linux core and have been since the beginning.

Some colleagues were happy to talk to Fuchsia about the new all-in-OS. Fuchsia is the future for desktop devices and Android smartphones. But no, it didn’t look like that for a long time. Don’t expect Fuchsia to or could ever replace Android on phones. Google currently has a different focus.

There is not much to see of fuchsia yet

Fuchsia has only been the basis of the operating system since its introduction. For example on the original Nest Hub. Fuchsia was introduced for the first time last year for this purpose. And not much has happened since then. Fuchsia is not visible to the user and actually not even noticeable.

The smart display has a different operating system, which nobody would actually notice if nobody had told us. In an announcement at the time, Google emphasized the primary use of fuchsia for IoT devices. It’s perfect for that. It’s small and light at the base, unlike old software like Android.

The latest sign of life indicates Chromebooks with fuchsia

It took almost a year for Fuchsia to attract fresh attention again . The fully-fledged Chrome browser is now able to run on Fuchsia and that stimulates interesting thoughts for the future of ChromeOS.

Fuchsia is also a platform for desktop devices, according to Google, and is therefore much more of a candidate for Chromebooks than Android smartphones. I could imagine a change, but Google doesn’t name it. That means: The operating system on Chromebooks is still called ChromeOS, but under the hood the basic structure is fuchsia.

ChromeOS comes with a few features of its own, and it comes with the Chrome browser. Otherwise apps are based on web standards and Android apps can be emulated. This is theoretically possible in a similar way with fuchsia.
