Google’s new tablet should be able to be used as a smart display, two worlds are growing together

After many years of abstinence, Google has rediscovered tablets and will be presenting several new devices in this category over the next few months, about which the first details have already become known. Now there’s new information on the first Pixel tablet that can play a dual role while also acting as a smart display. This would mean that two previously separate but related worlds would grow together.

Google hasn’t introduced a new Smart Display for a long time and a few weeks ago it was announced that an ominous new Nest Smart Display should also act as a tablet. The smart display should have a removable display and can therefore be used as a tablet at the same time. A logical development that is more innovative, but still very rare. Now, new information suggests the concept is being approached from the other side.

Source code leaks indicate that the Pixel tablet will have a dock that will allow the tablet to stand up and be used as a smart display. Internally, there is still talk of the Google Dock, which could play a major role in the future. Comparable to the Pixel Stand, not only in its function as a charger and desk stand but also as a smart display.

This assumption is confirmed by the fact that the images of the Pixel Tablet published by Google showed pins on the back of the device, with which it can be connected to the accessories. From the combination of the two sources, the plan for dual use as a tablet and smart display emerges quite clearly and leaves little room for further interpretation. And actually, that would make a lot of sense.

At first, we assumed that the next smart display could be used as a tablet. In fact, the next tablet can be used as a smart display. Sounds like jumping, but it’s something completely different. Because while many users willingly spend several hundred dollars/euros on a tablet, things are very different with smart displays. With the first variant, you would have a good smart display with a bad tablet. With the second variant, on the other hand, which may cost a little more, you can also have a good tablet.

Looking at the first-pixel tablet, it would also make little sense to launch a smart display with a flimsy detachable tablet anytime soon. That would clearly dilute Google’s tablet comeback due to lousy performance so this step will probably be saved. Maybe things will look different in subsequent years and you can offer it in a budget version, but waiting for the tablet seems to be the wiser option, at least for the first generation.
