Samsung may be using more LG batteries in its smartphones

While Samsung may have played an important role in bringing LG out of the smartphone market, the South Korean giant may be planning on sourcing even more batteries from its historical rival to power its smartphones.

According to a new report from Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is looking to source more batteries from LG. Samsung is reportedly willing to use LG batteries in both its entry-level and premium smartphones.

LG may be supplying more smartphone batteries to Samsung

Reports indicate that Samsung’s mobile division would be considering purchasing batteries from LG Energy Solution for use in Galaxy A and Galaxy M series phones.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has relied on LG for a crucial component used in its smartphones. The company has been using LG batteries since 2019, including in some of its best-selling Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series smartphones.

The basis of Samsung’s strategy would be the reduction of costs, but also the opportunity to diversify its sources of supply. Samsung has largely relied on Chinese companies for the batteries of its entry-level smartphones, but as supply problems still persist due to frequent lockdowns in China, diversifying sources should prevent Samsung’s production from being disrupted.

The batteries LG supplies to Samsung will likely be manufactured at the Nanjing plant before being transferred to ITM Semiconductor’s local Vietnam plant, where the protection circuits will be assembled and then packaged before being shipped to Samsung’s smartphone plant.
