Android TV: New Chromecast with Google TV is coming, cheap HD version appears as a ‘wireless device’

The Chromecast with Google TV has been on the market for a long time and has successfully brought both the dongle and the TV platforms used under one roof. It has been known for a long time that the Chromecast HD with Google TV will be a cheaper offshoot that focuses even more on the mass market. Now there are indications of an imminent release.

The current Chromecast with Google TV should be very successful but could use a hardware upgrade in the next generation that is better able to cope with the Android TV operating system and the Google TV interface and apps. But this generation will probably be a long time coming because first of all there is a budget offshoot. Although this has the supposedly better name on paper, it has lower performance, at least in terms of image quality.

There has been information about the Chromecast HD with Google TV since the beginning of the year and now it has appeared at the US authority FCC. A new product is listed there, which is referred to as a “wireless device” by Google. This designation has been used repeatedly in recent years to disguise the identity of the product, but the little information available and the timing leave little doubt as to what it is.

The “wireless device” can stream videos in HD quality and has a remote control. That doesn’t leave many options and since the Chromecast HD is just around the corner anyway, it should probably be the dongle. This should be presented in October at the latest, but could also be shown at a smart home event in August.

There is hardly any new information about the dongle, just a reminder about the product and the information that it will be on the market soon. It is therefore not to be assumed that a “Chromecast with Google TV 2” will come onto the market just a few weeks later.

Just a few days ago, the Chromecast was launched with Google TV in many other countries. The happy buyers in the new federal states would probably not be quite so happy if the product was declared a discontinued model shortly after unpacking it.

The only interesting technical data, not known until now, but not surprising either, are the following:

WLAN (2.4GHz) Link + Bluetooth Link (Bluetooth Earphone) + Controller Link + Video Streaming (1080p, 60Hz, 4:2:2,12bits) + USB Cable 1 (Charging from AC Adapter (Salcomp))

The resolution should be a maximum of 1080p, i.e. HD, with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz. It will be exciting at what price Google will bring the dongle onto the market. The last classic Chromecast is still available for 39.99. You should meet this price again or maybe even be below it.
