During the WWDC 2022 keynote, which kicked off on June 06, Apple only introduced the major new features in iOS 16, watchOS 9 and macOS Ventura. However, the tvOS software used in the Apple TV set-top box seems to be intentionally ignored by the company. Even so, Apple Insider has unearthed some new changes in tvOS 16.

Unlike other Apple hardware, tvOS has relatively few major updates. Most of its updates, which tend to be performance-related, aim to fix bugs and improve the user experience. However, in tvOS 16, Apple still introduced HomeKit and Apple Watch and Apple TV hardware connection support.

In addition, although support is fairly limited, Apple has emphasized its push for games that use Metal 3’s underlying API. Back in 2021, tvOS 15 brings Spatial Audio feature support to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users. The system uses gyroscopes and other sensors in the device to simulate 3D sound.

Additionally, Apple has extended the HomeKit security features added in tvOS 14 to allow users to view compatible security cameras in a grid view (accessible from Control Center/Fullscreen Camera View).

In October 2021, Apple will also bring SharePlay to the Apple TV platform, allowing users to share videos, music media, or other applications with friends and family through FaceTime.
