Pixel Launcher: Android update causes problems with the home screen widgets, remain empty for a short time

On Monday, many Pixel phone users could look forward to a slew of updates, including the recent Pixel Feature Drop. This is internally referred to as “Android 12 QPR3″ and has some new features in its luggage, but unfortunately also an ugly bug. As has only now been noticed, a bug in the Pixel Launcher ensures that widgets are reloaded every time the display is rotated.

Widgets have had a rather bleak existence for several years, but since Android 12 and Google’s focus on beautiful widgets at the latest, other app developers have also given more thought to mini apps for the home screen. So there’s a good chance that users have more widgets on their home screens today than they did a few months ago. Not only are they informative, but they also look stylish. But a bug triggered by the latest update now ensures that this is not always the case.

As soon as the smartphone’s orientation is rotated, the widgets on the home screen update and only show an empty gray frame for about 1-2 seconds. This can rarely happen with a widget in everyday life, but with Android 12 QPR3 it happens every time the launcher is called up if the display has been rotated beforehand. The best example would be YouTube or the camera, which are often used in landscape mode.

At 9to5Google you will find two videos showing the effect. Due to the rotation, which looks very wild in a video, it is hardly recognizable, but it could be annoying in everyday life. Hopefully, Google can fix that with another Pixel update next month. It will probably not be sooner due to the rather unimportant bug.
