The Windows 11 taskbar weather icon is dynamically upgraded

With small icons integrated into the Windows 11 taskbar, users can check the weather and temperature for the day without clicking on the icon. While this feature is very useful, not everyone is very concerned about weather information.

So Microsoft tried to improve the experience, with dynamic icon information users can now see real-time updates from sports and finance widgets, as well as breaking news alerts.

If the user does not interact with this information, the icon will return to show the weather. Microsoft said: “We’re experimenting with some changes to bring more dynamic widget content to your taskbar. In addition to viewing real-time content from the Weather widget, you’ll also start seeing live content from the Sports and Finance widgets. Live updates, as well as breaking news alerts”.

Microsoft continues: “These widgets make it quicker and easier to stay informed about important events and keep you up to date with breaking news. Content is designed to be quick and at-a-glance, and if you click on it, you can see more inside the widget board. However, if you don’t interact with content updates, the taskbar will return to showing you the weather”.

Right now, the feature isn’t available to all users in the Dev channel, as Microsoft says it’s using a phased approach where everyone can try it out. Most likely, it will take a few weeks for all users in the dev channel to get support for dynamic widget content, obviously if no major issues are found.
