BMW, OTA update for iDrive 7 and 8

OTA updates are becoming an increasingly present feature within new cars. Through this feature, automakers can introduce improvements and new features to their models, without owners having to go to dealerships to make any updates. BMW is among the manufacturers that are focusing on this technology.

For some time now, the manufacturer has begun to distribute a new update that will reach compatible cars equipped with the iDrive 7 and iDrive 8 platforms. Update that involved a total of over 3.3 million cars (30 models).

It should be noted that the availability and content of Remote Software Upgrades depend on the country, model, equipment and software version installed. Distribution is progressive.

SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS

Through the new Remote Software Upgrade, improvements have been made to ADAS systems. In particular, the lane-keeping assistant is now able to recognize that the driver wants to re-enter the lane after overtaking. During this maneuver, she only emits a haptic signal, in the form of a vibration of the steering wheel, and no longer corrects the steering.

BMW adds that the steering intervention carried out by the lane-keeping assistant is overall more comfortable because it adjusts the time and duration of the steering according to the driving situation: the slower the vehicle leaves the lane, the smoother it will be. corrective intervention on the steering.

The Remote Software Upgrade enables other vehicles to use BMW Personal eSIM, which integrates the vehicle into a mobile phone plan and uses the 5G standard for fast data exchange by the customer (on the iDrive 8 platform). After logging in with their BMW ID, customers can also make phone calls from the vehicle without their smartphone and take advantage of the connectivity for streaming services.

The new 8 Series models have received an improvement to the Iconic Glow function, which illuminates the BMW kidney grille. For the BMW i4 comes a new dedicated sound developed by Hans Zimmer. For the BMW iX, on the other hand, comes the new QlockTwo widget, a new digital clock that should make it easier to read the time even with the car in motion.

BMW has also added some details on the latest update of the My BMW app. In addition to a series of refinements that improve its functioning, a new widget arrives for Android and iOS.
