Google will make voice commands more useful on Android platforms

Being dated, Google’s voice command management system is primarily meant for conventional Android devices and is voice-only, so it’s not suitable when on-screen interaction with devices like a smartwatch is needed.

Google is taking steps to make voice control more useful on its platforms such as Wear OS and Android Auto and is simultaneously moving away from the current system.

With the new version of the framework, on Pixel 6 Google Assistant can indicate to the user the relevant apps for a certain command even when he does not mention the name of an app or when he is looking for the right one in “All apps” and in case the app required for a command is not installed, the user will be directed to the appropriate page in the Google Play Store.

This system will help users focus on performing tasks rather than creating the exact phrase they need.

Google will spread the usefulness of voice commands beyond Android smartphones

Developers will have a strong incentive to embrace the latest technology, however, Google will abandon the old system in June 2023 to give them time for a smoother transition.

Google has been preparing for such a migration for some time and as it plans to significantly expand platforms such as Android Auto and Wear OS, upgraded voice functionality has become paramount to the company. Google is also eliminating another outdated service. The Google Talk instant messaging service already has a retirement date.
