According to the latest reports, a company memo shows that starting this week, Apple will start shipping repaired iPhone 12 series models in new brown boxes that are 100% plastic-free. And made from Forest Stewardship Council-certified bleach-free paper. All repaired iPhones that Apple has shipped so far have been packaged in white boxes.
In the memo, Apple said it was trialing new packaging for repaired iPhones after the company pledged to eliminate plastic from all packaging by 2025. In April, Apple announced that it had reduced plastic in packaging by 75% since 2015, and said that in 2021 plastic will only account for 4% of the company’s packaging.
Eco-friendly packaging will be used on repaired iPhone 12 models from Apple Repair Center warehouses to Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and/or direct shipping to customers in the U.S. and other countries. Apple did not say whether it would extend the greener packaging to all repaired iPhones if the trial is deemed successful.
Apple previously announced that its global operations have been carbon-free since 2020, and the company said it has used 100 percent renewable energy to power its offices, stores and data centers since 2018. As of March 2022, Apple said its 213 manufacturing partners also committed to using 100% renewable electricity for Apple-related production.
