YouTube Shorts tops 1.5 billion monthly views

YouTube said Wednesday that Shorts, a fast, vertical, looping short video service that rivals TikTok, has been watched by more than 1.5 billion logged-in accounts each month. By contrast, TikTok said in September last year that more than 1 billion people use its app each month, and today’s 1.5 billion is the latest figure they have released.

As the world’s largest source of online video, YouTube as a whole has more than 2 billion monthly users. (However, this figure has not been updated in over three years). Google launched Shorts less than two years ago, starting in India and expanding to the US and other countries. Through Shorts, Google’s big video site is trying to compete with the buzz surrounding TikTok, the social video app run by Chinese company ByteDance.

Neal Mohan, YouTube’s chief product officer, said in a blog post: “What we’re seeing is that creators are getting very innovative in how they use multiple formats on the platform. While we’re still in the middle of a short film The beginning of the journey, we know the product will continue to be an integral part of the YouTube experience going forward.”

On Wednesday, YouTube said the growth of short-form viewers has spurred “the rise of multi-format creators” who produce material in different YouTube formats, such as short films, regular long-form videos, live broadcasts and audio.
