Apple now allows developers to transfer ownership of App Store apps that use iCloud

Apple has made an important update to the Apple Developer Program. Starting today, the company allows apps that use iCloud to be transferred to other developers. According to Apple, when selling apps to other developers, or wishing to transfer them to another App Store Connect account or organization, developers can now transfer them. Developers can transfer ownership of apps to other developers without removing them from the App Store.

Apple says:

The app retains its reviews and ratings during and after the transfer, and users can continue to access future updates. Additionally, when an app is transferred, it maintains its Bundle ID – after uploading a build for the app, It does not update the Bundle ID.

This means it’s easier for developers to transfer ownership of apps that use iCloud. Apple says that if a developer’s app uses any of the following, it will hand over the app to the recipient after accepting it for transfer:

  • iCloud stores user data;
  • iCloud container;
  • KVS identifiers are associated with applications.

Apple says:

“If multiple apps in a developer account share a CloudKit container, the transfer of one app will disable the ability of other apps to read or store data using the transferred CloudKit container. In addition, the transferor will no longer be able to use iCloud Meters The board accesses the transferred app’s user data. Any app update will disable the app’s ability to read or store data using the transferred CloudKit container.

If the developer’s application uses iCloud Key-Value Store (KVS), the full KVS value will be embedded in any new configuration file the developer creates for the transfer application. The entitlement attribute table file will be updated with the full KVS value in the configuration file. Earlier this year, Apple began letting developers of the Small Business Program move their apps. Now the company is extending this functionality to those apps that use iCloud.
