Canonical releases Ubuntu Core 22 for IoT and embedded applications

Canonical has just released Ubuntu Core 22, a fully containerized Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release designed for IoT and embedded applications. Through the use of snap packages, all software on Ubuntu Core is based on containerization, allowing seamless over-the-air updates of the kernel, operating system, and applications.

Since the software is already packaged in advance, snapshots prevent the application from encountering any dependency issues. If any trouble occurs during the update, the system can automatically roll it back to a previous working version.

Canonical’s official description of Ubuntu Core 22 is “low-touch,” citing its enhanced security features out of the box — including secure boot, full disk encryption, secure recovery, and strict restrictions on the operating system and applications.

Even better, the official promise is to provide Ubuntu Core 22 with up to ten years of update support.

Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth said:

From cloud environment development to edge computing devices, we are committed to providing safe and reliable open source products and services anywhere. With the new release, Canonical is ready to extend the benefits of Ubuntu Core to the entire embedded world.

Finally, if you’re using a desktop computer, Ubuntu Core 22 isn’t for you. Instead, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Long Term Support Release), released in April, is a better option.
