Samsung TVs accused of cheating benchmarks, official denies

According to Android Authority reports, earlier this year, a number of Samsung flagship phones were removed from Geekbench for manipulating benchmark scores. Now, the company has been caught cheating on TV benchmarks again.

A review editor at HDTVTest first spotted the benchmark cheating issue with the Samsung S95B QD-OLED TV, and FlatpanelsHD has confirmed that the issue also exists in Samsung’s Neo QLED LCD TV.

The allegations allege that Samsung allegedly used an algorithm to detect when benchmarking software was running on the TV, and adjusted colors and artificially increased brightness by as much as 80 percent during testing to make the device look better in reviews. According to FlatpanelsHD’s report, it’s impossible to maintain this level of brightness during normal use without damaging the TV’s backlight.

Samsung’s alleged cheating was discovered because of the way the benchmark software works, by focusing on 10% of the screen to test HDR TVs, when FlatpanelsHD changed the benchmark area to 9%, they could bypass the so-called algorithm and get an accurate score.

In response to these allegations, Samsung provided FlatpanelsHD with the following statement: “Samsung remains committed to relentlessly innovating to deliver the best picture quality to our consumers.

In order to provide consumers with a more dynamic viewing experience, Samsung will provide a software update, ensuring HDR content has consistent brightness across a wider range of window sizes beyond industry standards.”

The company also responded to The Register, stating that “Samsung Electronics did not use any algorithms to produce specific test results” and that Samsung said that its own and independent third-party tests “show that HDR content is It can be accurately displayed on the Internet, not just 10%.” Samsung also claims that peak brightness remains at a similar level for different window sizes without damaging the panel.
