Android Auto: The Google Maps Dark Mode is currently causing problems, it no longer switches automatically

Google Maps Navigation is one of the most important apps for Android Auto and is naturally used in both light and dark environments. There has been a dark mode for the latter since last year, but it is now causing problems. Many users are reporting these days that dark mode is either unusable or can no longer be switched off.

Google Maps was one of the last apps to receive a dark mode, although it was a bit faster on Android Auto than on a smartphone. Now, however, the dark mode is causing problems, as many Android Auto users report that the automatic switching between the two modes no longer works. In some cases the dark interface will not activate, in the vast majority of cases, it will not deactivate.

Normally, switching between the light and dark surfaces in the car should be automatic. This can be triggered by the vehicle system itself or decided by the Google Maps app based on the local time. This switching can be performed independently of the smartphone mode. The problem has probably been occurring since Google Maps version 11.33 and the update to version 11.34 a few days ago did not fix it either.

The post on the Google support forum is currently in the status of escalating the issue to the team. So it might take a few more days. As a workaround, there is the option of making the change yourself manually on your smartphone. However, this also has an impact on the smartphone, where the mode is then no longer switched automatically either.
