Google Messages: The messenger gets swipe gestures, delete or archive conversations with a swipe

The messenger Google Messages offers a growing range of functions and has been operating with a few gestures for a long time. So it is possible to archive a conversation by swiping to the side. This can be very useful, but sometimes annoying. Work is now being done to ensure that users can adjust this gesture in both directions – just as it is known from Gmail.

Power users of the Gmail app for Android should be familiar with the swipe gestures in the inbox. These can be used to perform an action defined via the settings by moving a conversation to the left or right. It’s similar to Google Messages, but so far there was only one function that couldn’t be deactivated. The swipe to the side resulted in the conversation being archived.

Now, as part of a teardown, it has been discovered that these gestures will soon be customizable. In the settings, there will be an option to adjust the left or right swipe separately. You can choose between archiving, deleting, or no action at all. So if you want both, you can have them. If you keep accidentally archiving conversations, you can turn it off. It is quite possible that further promotions will follow in the future.

So far, this new feature has not been rolled out, but that should happen in a few weeks. It should already appear with the first users, but changing the option will still have no effect.
