How to enable total cookie protection in Firefox

Mozilla has announced the start of deploying Total Cookie Protection for desktop Firefox users, and it’s unclear when regular users will be able to get the feature. TechDows, a some technology media, shared a little trick that allows you to experience this feature in advance.

How does Total Cookie Protection work?

Firefox is designed to protect you from third parties tracking cookies and information about your browsing activity without your knowledge or consent. These companies attempt to profile and sell details of your online spending, health and other personal information without your knowledge.

Total Cookie Protection builds a barrier around cookies, limiting them to the site you’re on, so third parties can’t use these same tracking beacons to track your cross-site behavior. For example, if you visit Facebook, Facebook won’t be able to see your activity on Etsy, One Medical, or your cousin’s cooking blog.

How to enable Total Cookie Protection?

  • Access the menu, select Settings
  • Visit Privacy & Security
  • Go to Customize in Browser Privacy > Enhanced Tracking Protection
  • Click the Cookies drop-down menu and select “Cross-site tracking cookies, and isolate remaining cross-site cookies”

Notice! This setting may cause some websites to not display content or work properly. If the website is abnormal, you may need to turn off tracking protection for the website in order to load the full content.

  • Restart Firefox

Or enable it through the experimental Flag method

  • Visit about:config
  • Search for cookies and find the network.cookie.cookieBehavior
  • Change the value from 4 to 5, exit and restart Firefox

The way to close is vice versa. Mozilla has invested a lot of time and after thorough testing, they have made this feature available to all users. If Total Cookie Protection breaks any website, you can disable it.
