Starfield, Digital Foundry’s video analysis talks about next-gen and old-gen elements

Starfield is the protagonist of the new Digital Foundry video analysis, which thoroughly observed the gameplay trailer of the game to emphasize both the next-gen and the old-gen aspects of the new Bethesda title.

As for the positive aspects, the Starfield gameplay video at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase seems to use a quality effect as regards the enhancement of details indoors, learning, in this case, the lesson of Halo Infinite compared to the much demo chat that led to the postponement of the Xbox exclusive.

Secondly, the rendering of space still represents an unknown factor in terms of the technologies used, but it seems to do its job very well, as does the mix of manual assets and procedural elements that characterize the surfaces of the planets that we will be able to explore.

For the moment two things make us turn up our noses: on the one hand the absence of ray tracing reflections or even screen space reflection, for the moment replaced by simple cubemaps; on the other hand, the evident drops in frame rates that can be seen during some phases of combat.

John Linneman compared the Starfield trailer with the graphics of Fallout 4, and in that sense, the progress made by Bethesda appears substantial. However, there are still several unknowns and the hope is that all doubts will be resolved between now and the launch. In the meantime, though, check out our Starfield special, a Star Citizen that made it.
