Apple began taking orders for two new 35-watt dual USB-C power adapters unveiled at WWDC yesterday, a day after Apple released a new support document outlining how power is distributed when a device is connected to both ports at the same time.
In most cases, the 35 watts of total power will be split evenly between the two connected devices, with the exception that one of the devices has a relatively low power requirement, such as the Apple Watch or AirPods charging case.
The working logic when connecting to different devices is as follows:
- If you connect the 35-watt dual USB-C power adapter to a Mac notebook and an iPhone or iPad, you can get up to 17.5W per device.
- If you connect an iPhone and an iPad, each device will also receive up to 17.5W.
- If you connect a Mac notebook or iPhone and Apple Watch or AirPods, the Mac notebook or iPhone can receive up to 27.5W, and the Apple Watch or AirPods can receive up to 7.5W.
The standard version of the Dual USB-C Adapter is already available worldwide, and it has a detachable charging plug that is compatible with replaceable international plugs and extension cables.
The compact version is only available in the US, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico and some other countries that use the Type A plug style. Both versions are priced at $59 in the US, and the new adapter will ship with the higher-spec new MacBook Air due next month.
