Samsung will supply Apple with 80 million OLED panels for iPhone 14

As Apple prepares to launch its iPhone 14 series in the fourth quarter of this year, the latest report claims that Samsung will once again fulfill a huge percentage of OLED panel orders for one of its most lucrative customers.

Apple had earlier invited Samsung, LG and BOE to mass-produce iPhone 14 displays. Unfortunately, BOE won’t be part of the team due to design changes, as it was previously caught modifying the design without authorization, according to ET News.

BOE was earlier reported to have resumed OLED panel production for the iPhone 13, but it was not included in the list of suppliers to fulfill iPhone 14 orders. According to industry sources, Samsung will provide Apple with 80 million iPhone 14 OLED panels, of which 38.17 million belong to the lower-priced iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max (or iPhone 14 Plus).

Both phones are expected to come with LTPS technology, not LTPO. LTPO will likely be reserved for the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This means that the cheaper iPhone 14 models will lose the ProMotion high refresh drive technology.

Samsung appears to be well-positioned to fulfill its responsibilities in fulfilling this large order. The South Korean supplier has been selecting material suppliers to supply the components needed to make the iPhone 14 OLEDs since last year, with Duksan Neolux, Samsung SDI and Solus Advanced Materials among those found on the M12 listing.

Duksan Neolux is reportedly tasked with sourcing Red Prime and Green Prime, as the name suggests, the materials that make the device glow red and green. The supplier will also provide HTL, which the report says is an auxiliary material.

Samsung SDI will provide Green Host green materials, while Solus Advanced Materials will provide A-ETL, an OLED panel composed of various layers and materials that determine its maximum brightness and lifespan.

Samsung requires that the above materials will ensure that high-quality parts are used to assemble the iPhone 14. The report does not provide details on how many panel orders LG intends to fulfill, but it should be a smaller number compared to Samsung.
