Windows 11 File Explorer Tab page greatly reduces memory usage, new pages only take up a few MB

Microsoft Windows 11 finally launched the File Explorer Tab page in Sun Valley 2 (version 22H2), which will be launched in the fall, and is currently available for preview users.

According to Windows Latest, File Explorer that supports Tabs uses less memory than the original File Explorer in Windows 11. Some media observed this in the test, and some users also reported similar results.

For example, if you start a new tab, the file explorer process will only add a few megabytes to the memory footprint. This improvement will be especially useful for users who have the habit of opening multiple instances/windows of File Explorer.

While the update is rolling out in stages, it’s still possible that Microsoft will further enhance File Explorer’s performance. When Windows 11 22H2 rolls out to the public in the fall, expect everyone to get this feature right away.

Windows 11’s File Explorer Tab page allows users to better manage files, and also introduces a new layout of the left navigation pane, where users can easily navigate to important folders.

The updated organization has easy access to pinned and common folders (Quick Access) and OneDrive cloud profiles added to Windows. Known Windows folders that are available by default in the Navigation Pane are no longer displayed under This PC, and when users navigate to OneDrive’s folders (eg Documents, Pictures, etc.), the address bar displays the correct path to identify the folder Either on-premises or in the cloud.
