Surface Go, pay attention to firmware 1.0.34: more than someone is in serious trouble

It would still be there, ready to be installed, the update for the first-generation Surface Go that has put more than a few users in serious difficulty. Still, the thread on Microsoft’s support pages is enriched with new reports on damage resulting from the May update, which, to read the changelog, was supposed to solve some vulnerabilities and improve system stability.

Instead, now there are several customers who complain about a system stably unusable after the update to firmware 1.0.34.0. The screen on reboot No bootable device, no bootable device, there seems to be no way to send it away. The thread on the Microsoft community was opened in the last days of May when a user reported that he had not been able to solve the problems that arose with the update and that he had already seen similar reports on Reddit in the previous days.

In short, it is a not-insignificant problem in front of which until now everyone has been able to do nothing but raise their hands. It is curious that in the meantime Microsoft has not withdrawn the firmware as it usually happens, to prevent the number of non-working Surfaces Go from growing over time. The recommendation is obvious: if the 1.0.34.0 firmware is awaiting installation, it is better to avoid it by disabling Windows Update so as not to risk anything.

The key to solving it could lie in storage: it seems that Surface Go with eMMC is vulnerable, unlike those with SSD (we tested the latter in 2018). Microsoft, however, has made it known that it is aware of the problem and that in the corridors of Redmond we are working to solve it, but the days go by and it would at least be useful to prevent other customers from ending up in a trap – involuntary on Microsoft’s part, God forbid. – which risks “killing” other first-generation Surface Go’s.
