PlayStation Plus and PS1 games at 50Hz in Europe: Sony says 60Hz is on the way

Today is the big day. The new PlayStation Plus, in fact, also lands in Italy, and to know all the news and details there is our dedicated article. Here, however, we focus on one aspect in particular of Sony’s renewed offering, namely the PlayStation 1 titles included in the Premium plan. There is a difference, in fact, between how PS1 games run in the US and in Europe, and it is a difference that comes from afar.

NTSC AND PAL: MEMORIES THAT ARE CURRENT

Do you remember when the titles came out in different versions depending on the market areas? And of the same title, there was, therefore, for example, the NTSC version for the USA and the PAL version for Europe instead. Here, PS1 games ran at 60Hz in the NTSC versions, while they stopped at 50Hz in the PAL ones. And this difference, today, is also transposed on the PlayStation Plus catalog: European users, therefore, find themselves underperforming iterations of the same titles compared to the American public.

Sony, however, immediately intervened on the subject by communicating that it plans to bring the majority of PS1 classics from the PS Plus Premium catalog in the NTSC version to Europe as well as Asia, the Middle East, India, and South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

There are therefore two observations to make. First of all, we are not talking about ” all ” games, but about the ” majority of classics “. Furthermore, the viable solution is not – as expected – a code overhaul of the PAL versions, but simply to make NTSC games available to users in markets outside the US: however, this means that localization will have to be dispensed with and played. in English.
