The Galaxy S23 series will not have an under-screen front camera

Like the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung is not considering adding an under-display front-facing camera to the upcoming Galaxy S23 series. While no reason has been given, there is some speculation out there as to why the South Korean giant is reluctant to make the change. Samsung may be unhappy with the image quality of the under-screen cameras, not to mention the cost of producing them.

A user named Ianzuk discussed on the Korean website Naver that, according to unnamed supply chain sources, the under-screen camera technology will not be present in the Galaxy S23 series. He didn’t mention whether one or all members of Samsung’s future flagship family would be cut from the feature, or why Samsung was reluctant to adopt it.

Earlier, we reported that the Galaxy S23 would get an upgrade to the front-facing camera, but nowhere was it mentioned that Samsung was mulling bringing the under-screen technology to a possible three models. Maybe the South Korean tech giant doesn’t seem to be happy with the decision, as the in-screen camera hasn’t evolved to the point where it doesn’t affect image quality.

Samsung’s competitors such as ZTE and Xiaomi have tried such changes, and even they have not been able to improve the image quality of the front-facing sensor placed behind the display. Even Samsung’s $1,799 Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the U.S. has an under-display camera, and testers concluded that the image quality processed by this sensor was noticeably lower for a smartphone this pricey. Saying that is unacceptable.

It’s worth mentioning that mass-producing the under-display camera would be an expensive venture for Samsung, as shipments of the Galaxy S23 could be in the thousands. Assuming the cameras produce less-than-ideal images, that would displease customers who paid big bucks for the phones, while also forcing Samsung to lose both the goodwill of customers and the money it invested in mass-producing the cameras.

Hopefully, when other manufacturers adopt the technology more frequently, we can expect Samsung to bring the under-display camera to the high-end devices of its Galaxy S line. The blog post mentions that the Galaxy S24 models may feature under-display camera technology, but it’s too early to comment on this rumor.
