Normally, Android apps can no longer be used directly if your device goes into standby and is thus locked. This behavior is normal, but it doesn’t happen with every app. The calculator can always be used, even if your display or mobile phone has switched to standby in the meantime.
If you have opened the calculator app and the display goes out, you can activate the display at any time and continue working on the calculator. It is not necessary to unlock the smartphone. You can use the calculator directly, but not other functions of the smartphone unless you unlock it.
