Google: Next exclusive pixel feature to be released

Google introduced crash detection on Pixel phones a few years ago. Now the feature is coming to other Android devices. Unfortunately, you may not be familiar with the feature, because the detection of car accidents is still not usable in Germany.

It’s so awesome though. Based on an analysis of the sensors in the smartphone, the software is able to recognize a car accident and thus automatically trigger an emergency call. A year ago, an affected user reported that this feature on his Pixel phone was very likely to save his life.

Google plans to release an exclusive pixel feature to other OEMs

There’s some evidence that Google may release crash detection to work on non-Pixel devices. It is not yet entirely clear what exactly the release for devices from other OEMs could look like.

But Google has been working on this topic for a while, as Mishaal Rahman can report based on his research these days. As far as integration is concerned, the cooperation of the manufacturers is also important.

Accident detection evaluates various sensors

Almost every modern smartphone already has the sensors used for this on board. Also, the right software to tap these sensors with very little energy consumption. Various parameters are evaluated, including data from the acceleration sensors, but also the position of the device and the noise generated by the microphones. The magic happens through the software, which knows how to interpret the data correctly.

Hopefully, Google is also working on making accident detection available in more countries. There was another small rollout a few months ago, but not for German users. The function has been integrated on German Pixel devices for years, but must not be activated.
