Apple brought a new M2 processor at WWDC 2022, and it is expected to be equipped with a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. The computer went on sale last week.
The iFixit teardown shows that the Apple M2 MacBook Pro has not been significantly upgraded compared to the previous generation, and even they believe that this MacBook is just a “recycled laptop” with a new processor inside. Simply put, except for the M2 chip, the new phone has almost no changes from the 2020 model.
M2 MacBook Pro
Considering Apple’s usual style, the practice of putting new wine in old bottles is not particularly surprising. In this new machine, Apple still uses the body of the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro, and the internal design is almost the same.
However, iFixit also noticed that newer laptops generally have a slightly different bottom cover, but this Macbook is exactly the same as the 2020 version, and even both have the laser-engraved model number “A2338”, and the exact same FCC ID, which confirms that Apple didn’t even bother to get a new label.
On a related note, MKBHD points out that even the box is the same as the previous model, as Apple just put a new sticker with the M2 tech specs on top of the old one. From the teardown video, the screws on the bottom cover of this model are exactly the same as the 2021 model, including most of the internal components. By the end of the comparison, only the chips have changed, but they are in exactly the same position as the M1 MacBook Pro’s motherboard.
Looking at it completely, this model doesn’t seem to have any new changes except the processor, just for some reason the heat sink has been smoothed out on the corners (maybe an exception?), but this is the work of the new device’s cooling system method has no effect.

In addition, iFixit also confirmed the changes to the SSD in the 13-inch MacBook Pro, with the 256GB version of the model now featuring a single NAND chip, with significantly lower transfer speeds compared to the M1 MacBook Pro with 256GB.
Difficulty of maintenance
iFixit points out that Apple has been looking for ways to make third-party repairs more difficult, and even the serial number of the trackpad on newer laptops is tied to the SoC, which means you have to replace the entire motherboard to repair it, and the repair is not worth much.
However, iFixit believes that the M2 MacBook Pro will also be added to Apple’s user self-repair program in the future so that consumers can purchase legitimate Apple repair tools and MacBook Pro parts to replace themselves.
