With the acceleration of GM’s electrification transformation, its Bolt EV/EUV has finally begun to rebound, and the GMC Hummer EV pickup is also developing at full speed. In the second quarter, GM delivered 582,401 vehicles in the U.S., down 15.4 percent from a year earlier, but it was the third straight quarter of sequential growth, including 387,582 Chevys and 132,055 GMCs.
The two brands sold a combined 7,217 plug-in electric vehicles (including the BrightDrop Zevo 600) in the U.S. or about 1.2 percent of GM’s total sales. While GM’s EV sales are still below expectations, it’s showing signs of rebounding and bucking the trend, so GM also expects them to have better quarterly results.
General Motors plans to increase electric vehicle sales in North America to more than 1 million by the end of 2025.
Q1 EV deliveries in 2022
From the results, the Chevrolet Bolt EV/Bolt EUV (affected by a massive battery recall) began to rebound after production resumed in April, the new 2023 model was also cheaper, and GMC Hummer EV electric pickup sales continued to climb.
- Chevrolet Bolt EV / Bolt EUV: 6,945 (down 38% from 11,263 y/y)
- GMC Hummer EV pickup: 272 (new record)
- 7,217 total (down 36%), or 1.2% of GM’s sales
- (Excluding an undisclosed number of BrightDrop EVs)
GM also said that production of the Cadillac Lyriq is accelerating (starting in March) and that “initial deliveries are underway.” In the second half of 2022, this figure will continue to grow.
Ultium Cells (a joint venture with LG Energy Solutions) is also a positive sign. “Starting battery production in Ohio to support the expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing starting in August”.
That means GM will soon have plenty of Ultium batteries to power the launch of new Ultium-based electric vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV pickup, the Cadillac Lyriq, and the BrightDrop Zevo 600.
