Microsoft issued a reminder today that Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will reach the end of support in October 2023, when no updates will be released. The company emphasized that the end of support is an important milestone that requires customers to prepare, recommending users to either switch to Azure or opt for a newer version of Windows Server, such as Windows Server 2022.

Microsoft also warned that SQL Server 2012 will also end support this month, and the best way to avoid the security risks posed by EOL is to upgrade to SQL Server 2019. Microsoft said: “SQL Server 2012 will reach the end of support on July 12, 2022, and Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 will reach end of support on October 10, 2023. After this date, these products will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, or technical support”.

“Microsoft recommends customers migrate applications and workloads to Azure to run securely,” said Microsoft. Azure SQL Managed Instance is fully managed and always up to date (PaaS). Customers can also upgrade to Azure virtual machines, including Azure Dedicated Host, Azure VMWare solutions and Azure Stack (Hub, HCI, Edge) for an additional three years of extended security updates for free”.

Meanwhile, the Redmond-based software giant has warned that Windows Server 2008 will no longer receive extended security updates after January 10, 2023. ESU can be renewed for an additional year at an additional cost.

Microsoft said: “SQL Server 2008/R2 and Windows Server 2008/R2 Extended Security Updates (ESU) will end of support on July 12, 2022, and January 10, 2023, respectively. Customers who need additional time to upgrade can do so on Azure Rehost their servers to get an extra year of free ESU”.
