Samsung’s smartphone shipments fell 16% in the second quarter

According to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, a financial data company from Yonhap News Agency, Samsung’s profit in the second quarter of this year will reach 14.5 trillion won, an increase of 15.6% over the same period last year.

The survey shows that despite slowing demand for smartphones and home appliances, Samsung’s second-quarter sales are expected to reach 76.8 trillion won, an increase of 20.6%, thanks to a strong semiconductor business. Net income may increase by 19.8% to 11.5 trillion won.

Yonhap News Agency said strong demand for memory chips used in servers and data centers underpinned Samsung’s profit growth. In the second quarter, global shipments of DRAM and NAND flash memory increased by 9% and 2% year-on-year, respectively.

By sector, Samsung’s chip business is expected to grow by 42%, with a profit of 9.8 trillion won; while smartphone shipments will drop 16% from the previous quarter to an estimated 61 million units. This will cause the profit of the mobile phone division to drop by 600 billion won compared with the second quarter of last year, to 2.6 trillion won.

Due to the influence of sexual factors, the profit of the home appliance division is expected to be about 500 billion won, less than half of the profit in the second quarter of last year; for the display panel, the profit in the second quarter is expected to be 300 billion won less than the same period last year down to 1 trillion won.

At the same time, due to factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian war and inflation, analysts predict that the sales of electronic equipment in the second half of the year are still not optimistic. It is worth mentioning that Samsung will release official earnings data for the second quarter of this year on Thursday.

Data from analyst firm Gartner shows that global shipments of devices such as mobile phones and personal computers will drop by 7.6% this year. Ranjit Atwal, the senior principal analyst at Gartner, said, “The multifaceted impact of geopolitical turmoil, inflation, currency volatility, and supply chain disruptions has reduced demand for devices from businesses and consumers around the world and will have a severe impact on the PC market in 2022.
