Samsung brings an 8K TV series to Europe for the first time

The original Sky production “Das Boot” will be available in 8K resolution in Germany on Samsung TVs starting in July. The official announcement confirms the advances reached the beginning of the year and allows for the first time in Europe to bring a very high-resolution TV series to consumers’ homes. Access to the content passes through the Samsung TV Plus application on 8K televisions belonging to 2020, 2021 and 2022 range:

2020 models

  • Q800T
  • Q950T

2021 models

  • QN800A
  • QN900A

2022 models

  • QN700B
  • QN800B
  • QN900B

Samsung also specifies the requirements relating to the internet connection, which must be able to guarantee a speed of at least 40 Mbps.

Mike Henkelmann, director of marketing consumer electronics for Samsung, said:

As a pioneer in the 8K technology market, Samsung is making an important contribution by allowing viewers to sample ultra-high resolution image quality.

Gus Grimaldi, Head of Product for Samsung Europe, added:

Samsung is constantly striving to evolve its streaming services by combining exciting content and video technologies. Thanks to these efforts we are now proud to bring amazing 8K content to Samsung TV Plus users.

Frank Jastfelder, Director of Original Productions scripted for Sky, commented:

We are looking forward to the third season of “Das Boot” again this year. Presenting to viewers a stunning, visually appealing and world-class staging production not only in Ultra HD but also at 8K resolution with the best possible picture and sound quality is in line with our goals and we are excited to have Samsung as a partner.

The 10 episodes that make up the third season are set in 1943 and follow the events of the crew of a German submarine during the Second World War. The episodes were filmed over 104 days between Prague and Malta.

The cast includes Tom Wlaschiha, Robert Stadlober and Fritzi Haberlandt. At the moment there seem to be no plans to enable viewing in 8K in other countries, probably due to the greater importance that the series has in the German market (the production is Bavaria Fiction for Sky).
