Wear OS from Google: The big restart 2.0 is imminent

After Google presented the new Wear OS last year and sold it exclusively to Samsung, a year later the extensive restart took place with other partners on board. The reboot on Wear OS 3 went a little differently than expected.

The heavily revised watch operating system not only needs newer hardware under the hood, but it also was not even offered to other partners for a whole year. Samsung alone was allowed to distribute Wear OS 3 on its Galaxy Watch 4. Which was still enough to set clear records in terms of market share.

Wear OS Reboot was exclusive to Samsung

Even then, it was said that Wear OS 3 would be released in the summer of 2022. This means that other watch manufacturers can also release new smartwatches with the software. And something is slowly happening. A real starting signal is still missing, but Fossil and Co. are getting things moving. For example, Montblanc has already announced a new model that has Wear OS 3 on board.

Fossil and Co. again with signs of life

Fossil made a public statement a few days later and talked about a new companion app that is absolutely necessary for watches with Wear OS 3. Google itself is slowly preparing for the market launch of the Pixel Watch, which will probably go on sale in the fall. It’s still quiet around Mobvoi and other brands. But it should only be a matter of time before there is more exciting news.

Wear OS 3: Release is imminent, but there is still no date

A few of the Wear OS smartwatches already available can still be updated. It is the devices with Snapdragon 4100+ (Fossil Gen 6, TicWatch Pro 3) that can and should receive an update to Wear OS 3. This has been known since last year, and since then everyone has been eagerly waiting for the official release. At the start of the 7th month of the year, it was unclear when this would actually take place.
