Before the opening of the public beta, 9to5Google has already released a preview screenshot of Samsung One UI 5 customized based on Android 13. However, considering that it is not a version released publicly by Samsung, there is no detailed update log here, and the related styles are shown (compared to One UI 4) are for reference only.
(1) First of all, in terms of notifications, One UI 5 is slightly adjusted compared to One UI 4, supplemented by new icons and updated design styles, as well as fine-tuning of the transparency of notification shadows and quick settings.
(2) Secondly, One UI 5 uses the default Android permission dialog style. It is speculated that the development team is to reduce unnecessary changes and speed up the update process of One UI, but the possibility of further adjustments will not be ruled out in the future.
(3) Samsung introduced OCR optical character recognition for One UI 5’s photo albums and the ability to easily copy the content to other apps/input method keyboards.
When the device detects that a photo contains text, it displays a dedicated button at the bottom of the gallery to allow users to extract the relevant text from the image — a feature that was also part of Bixby Vision.
Interestingly, the UI and way of working with keyboard OCR are somewhat similar to Apple’s iOS system — you can select any text field and easily insert it elsewhere.
(4) Similar to the Google Pixel, One UI 5 also ushered in a new version of the Security and Privacy Center on Android 13. All account passwords of the user are managed here, and all content can be easily accessed. In addition, it scans for anything that might abuse app permissions or doesn’t have security settings enabled, and then makes better security recommendations.
(5) Among the lab features, One UI 5 provides new options for multitasking and access. Two-finger swipe up from the bottom of the screen is now available to access the split-screen view.
Or swipe in from the top-right corner to activate Air Mode — while both gestures don’t yet work in the latest leaked preview build, Samsung should unlock it when it’s officially launched.
(6) The remaining changes include enabling collaboration for the Samsung Notes app, and (7) the currently active app located in quick settings.
(7) The image of the device is shown on the “About Phone ” page, and (9) the newly introduced ultra-wideband (UWB) feature switch in the settings.
To sum up, there are not many new things introduced in One UI 5 at this stage. However, through small improvements in animation and other aspects, the Samsung development team still strives to show users a fast and refreshing positive side.
Recently, Samsung seems to be paying more attention to the speed of updates, so both the beta version and the planned release time may be opened a month earlier. That way, the company can bring updates to more devices as quickly as possible and focus on fresh features later.
Finally, owners of devices like the Galaxy S22 will also be able to warm up their devices for a long time, thanks to a four-year OS update commitment. As for the update support for Galaxy Fold Z / A series smartphones and Tab tablets, it still takes time to test.
