Xbox cloud gaming team will solve Linux performance problems, users can use the Edge browser first

Microsoft’s Xbox cloud games on the Linux operating system performed significantly worse than the Windows platform. This was first spotted by a Reddit user who published his conclusions after testing the streaming service on Manjaro (a Linux distribution) and Windows.

He pointed out that the visual quality of the game has dropped significantly in Linux (Manjaro). As the GIF below demonstrates, the edges are noticeably sharper in Windows. Compared to Windows images, Linux images also have faded, blurry text and logos.

Another Reddit user u/CohenJordan, who is part of Microsoft’s Xbox cloud gaming team, provided an update on the situation. The member explained that this is a purely technical issue as Linux is not currently technically an officially supported platform for Xbox cloud gaming, so reverting it back to the default resolution and bitrate, which is more important for a wider range of devices — especially Older and less powerful devices — will be more secure and performant.

u/CohenJordan added that regardless of the operating system, the team wants everyone to have the best possible game streaming experience. The Xbox team is also considering changing the default to a smarter version, but no specific plans have been announced.

The loss of image quality when playing Xbox cloud games on Linux can be compensated by using the Clarity Boost feature of the Microsoft Edge browser. Clarity Boost is a client-based scaling improvement technology that improves image quality while maintaining the original transfer rate.
