20% of Tesla employees who left in the past 90 days joined a rival company

Tesla recently laid off about 200 employees who were responsible for developing the self-driving system for electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3. Data from the recruitment platform shows that many of the laid-off Tesla employees went to other companies in the electric vehicle field.

In early June, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tesla needed to lay off 10% of its salaried employees. These laid-off employees no doubt still need to work. When a person has high-end software programming experience in an advanced electric vehicle manufacturer on their resume, it tends to be a sweet spot in the eyes of other electric vehicle manufacturers.

Relevant recruitment data shows that although most of Tesla’s former employees have left the auto industry. But for ex-Tesla employees who choose to stay in the electric car industry, they compete directly with their old owners. According to rough statistics, as of now, in the past 90 days, a total of 457 employees have left Tesla. Of those, 90 went to EV startups like Lucid and Rivian, while the rest went to traditional automakers like Ford or GM.

This means that 21% of employees who leave Tesla are working for competitors. Today, Tesla faces increasing competition in the electric vehicle space. Ford’s BlueCruise software is as good as Autopilot, and the Mach E is starting to gradually become a solid alternative to the Model Y. Although Rivian is struggling with sales, it can be said that it is the hottest electric car maker right now. Lucid cars have far more range than the Model S.

Apple, the world’s largest technology company, is also working on electric vehicles. As Tesla struggles to defend its market dominance, other brands are stepping up to get a piece of the action.

Tesla wants to solve this problem. The company insists the Cyber electric pickup and new electric sports car are on the way, the Semi electric truck will hit the road anytime, and it’s preparing to launch a new full-featured supercharging station. It all shows that Tesla is diversifying and trying to deliver on its promises. But whether Tesla can do that while retaining talent is another question entirely.
